GOG, the company spun out from CD Projekt RED that went independent in December last year, has announced that it is finally creating a Linux version of its GOG Galaxy launcher.
The app, which shows all of the GOG games you have purchased - as well as games from a multitude of other sources like Steam, Epic Games and Xbox - is a favourite of mine on Windows, where it rivals Steam in terms of feature depth and ease of use. Yet, despite GOG offering Linux downloads when possible, the Galaxy app remains out of reach for Linux users.
The news comes via GamingOnLinux, who spoke to GOG's co-CEO Krzysztof Papliński via email. Papliński said that Linux support is "one of the topics we hear the most about from our community", and that the firm appreciated the interest from Linux gamers. To sate that demand, GOG advertised for and hired a Linux "specialist" who will be responsible for the Galaxy-on-Linux project.
What's your go-to game launcher? (558 votes)
- Steam
- GOG Galaxy
- Xbox
- Heroic/Lutris
- Something Else
According to Papliński, this won't be the work of a moment - he called it a "significant undertaking" that precludes the sharing of any "specific plans, timelines or results" at the present time. However, the co-CEO underlined that it's "very much an area we're investing time and effort into", and that they are looking forward to share more details in the future.
It'll be fascinating to see whether the Galaxy app arrives in full on Linux, or whether GOG will pursue a more piecemeal strategy that sees individual features added over time. I would personally welcome the latter, as even basic Linux support would already make a huge difference, but I guess we'll have to wait and see how things pan out.
In the meantime, you can use third-party GOG launchers like Lutris or Heroic Games Launcher, or use Valve's Proton compatibility later to install the Windows version inside of Steam, though both approaches leave a little to be desired.
Are there any other Windows gaming apps that need Linux versions? And have you tried GOG Galaxy? Let me know in the comments below.
