Good news, everyone. Rockstar Games has finally confirmed the pre-order date for Grand Theft Auto 6: the 25th of June, this year. That's a week away, and means that any further delays for the most anticipated game of the year are quite unlikely.
The launch platforms, as previously announced, are PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. There's no information about a potential PC or Switch 2 version as yet.
The GTA 6 website also now includes a short video that shows off a wide city shot of GTA 6 (thanks to ResetEra user Maxi). Weirdly, the ferris wheel doesn't seem to have a reflection - which we think we can explain.

As well as the date itself, the video also serves as the official cover art reveal, which you've already seen in the thumbnail if you clicked here from elsewhere on the website or on social media.
If you want to use the background as a wallpaper, you can find it at the official GTA 6 website in up to 4K (16x9), up to 5K (ultrawide) or in phone and tablet-friendly varieties.
Are you pre-ordering day one? Or are you waiting for previews and reviews like a sensible video game buyer? Let me know in the comments below!

Why would I preorder a game months and months ahead of launch when it's bound to have a gazillion copies (and digital options) with no issue?
I mean, it's cute for marketing but super pointless as a consumer.
@Eruanno I actually do pre-order some titles months ahead, but only for big franchises I love or developers I am 100% invested in and trust to make great games. Digital pre-orders usually comes with bonuses of some type, and (eventually close to release) allow pre-loading on your console so the game is ready to go at its unlock time. Which for me in my time zone, is almost always 11 PM on the day before release.
Resident Evil Requiem is the last one I pre-ordered, since I've played every RE title there is. And I just pre-ordered Marvel's Wolverine, since I have played nearly ever Insomniac title they have developed - yes even Fuse haha. Every Spyro the Dragon, every Ratchet & Clank, every Resistance and every Spider-Man game so far. I think I've only missed Sunset Overdrive since I don't buy Xbox consoles, and their random PC/mobile stuff.
But you're right - if I pre-ordered Wolverine just a day before release, the end result would have been the same. Same bonuses, same pre-load, etc.
I have no interest in playing GTA6 but i look forward to DF's coverage of the tech and eye candy of the game.
@AmazingCass Right, but I'm not wondering why would anyone preorder ever. I get that there are preorder bonuses or preloads and stuff. What I'm wondering is why the heck would anyone preorder a game in June that doesn't come out in November? There's nothing to gain by preordering something months and months in advance.
All moving objects in that short video have no reflections in the water, so if they're using RT reflections, only all static objects will be in the BVH. It's a bit odd they don't have screen space reflections as a fallback for the objects in motion though. It does indicate that RT reflections are used though.
@Eruanno There's definitely a case for pre-ordering early for physical collectors' and limited editions in case they get scalped. For normal physical versions I'd say there's less of a point because in my experience you usually don't know what the best deal is before roughly a week before launch. Even so, you can usually cancel if you find a better deal. Additionally, we've recently seen examples of physical RE9 being hard to find in some regions, especially the XSX version.
When the news Rockstar failed to get allegations of blacklisting excluded from the 'Union busting' case bought by the IWGB, it was clear they would soon announce pre orders for GTA 6 as a distraction. As for the game, might buy it on PC when its on deep discount in a sale sometime in the far future. GTA hasnt been as much fun after it went 3D.
I look forward to playing the definitive version of GTAVI...on PS6 Pro, probably.
In all seriousness, it'll be a day one/ week purchase whenever it does see release. The tech will be fascinating, not to mention seeing the talent and effort that goes into these GTA games, even if the gameplay may not be revolutionary. I hope the wait will be worth it.
If I was planning to buy this game digitally then, no, I would absolutely not be pre-ordering it on 25th June. Why would I want to pay for a game months ahead of release when it could get delayed again? That would be stupid. Also, they are certainly not going to run out of digital copies of the game, that is a fact! It's why I never pre-order games on Steam; I just Wishlist them and then buy them on release.
However, I will be pre-ordering a physical copy of the game for my PS5 Pro from Amazon as (a) there is no risk doing so as Amazon only take payment on dispatch so if the game is released then so be it, it doesn't cost me anything; and (b) I am a collector of physical games and unlike digital games there is finite number of copies available so it makes sense to pre-order for those so long as the retailer you are ordering from does not take money upfront.
@wsjudd It’s not the USK label alone, it’s the delightful combination of PEGI + USK. But most people will buy it digitally anyways.
@Max_the_German You're quite right, Max the German!
